Newesletter No.15 18th December 2013

As we come to the end of another school term, I would like to reflect over the achievements of our pupils this term. Once again, we have had many exciting events such as the Football Tournament across our cluster of six Redbridge schools, an Arts Performance with secondary schools in Waltham Forest, where our dancers stole the show, the CFA Movie Night, which was extremely popular, and the Children in Need Sleepover and activities. The fundraising efforts by parents, staff and children resulted in the highest amount for any school in Redbridge for Children in Need; over £2,000!
As always, it has been an extremely busy term, with the children’s results in Reading, Writing and Maths showing improvement across the school. Our Early Years and Year 2 outcomes are above the National level. Last year, the attainment for Year 6 was slightly below the National level as the children had not been at school throughout the primary phase and 22 joined in Key Stage 2. But during their time at the school, which for some was very limited, Year 6 made above average progress when compared with many other Redbridge Schools.
I would therefore take this opportunity to thank the Cranbrook team for their hard work and parents for their continued support.
Staffing As you know for the past year I have been in the role of Executive Headteacher across Cranbrook and Roding Primary Schools. At Roding I was supported by Helen Radmore, one of our substantive Deputy Headteachers. I am pleased to announce that Helen was interviewed last week and appointed as the substantive Headteacher at Roding Primary School. I am sure you will all join me in congratulating her.
This means that over the past two years, two of the school’s Deputy Headteachers (Mark and Helen) have successfully gained headships elsewhere, and thus the Governing Body and I have advertised to appoint two senior leaders to the post of Deputy Headteacher and Assistant Headteacher respectively. Thankfully, Darshan continues in her role as Deputy Headteacher, along with Paven and Mark, who remain as Assistant Headteachers, providing much valued stability for the school.
From January 2014, I will return to my substantive position as Headteacher at Cranbrook. I would like to thank the Governing Body and the staff team for their huge support throughout the year.

Parental Concerns If you have any concerns, please see the class teacher in the first instance and/or relevant member of staff. In addition, I am appalled to hear that my office staff are regularly abused by parents who may be unhappy about something. Whilst I realise that there will be times when parents are not happy with the school, no adult deserves to be shouted at for doing their job. I would ask that displeasure is expressed in a decent way, so that we can work together to address any issues.
Nelson Mandela Like many people around the world, I have been very moved by the death of this amazing man. In school we have led assemblies and discussions, I would encourage parents to do the same at home.
CFA Movie Night We raised £1500, which will be used to develop the playground. Many thanks to all those who have given their time, effort and commitment to make this event a huge success. It is a shame that some parents failed to read letters and group call messages that were sent out in good time with the deadline, did not pay attention and were disappointed when told their child could not participate due to a cap on numbers for health and safety reasons.
CFA members, parent reps and those who helped on the day are invited to a thank you Coffee Morning on Friday 20th December at 9.15am in the Staff Room.us for a hot drink and a mince pie
P.E./Cold Weather As the cold weather is now upon us, please ensure that your child has a coat, hat, scarf and gloves. For outdoor P.E. sessions, children should wear a tracksuit (or sweatshirt and jogging bottoms).

Christmas Parties Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be having their Christmas parties on Monday 16th December. Nursery, Reception, Years 5 and 6 will be having their parties on Thursday 19th December. Children will need to bring food just for themselves for their party, as we cannot provide this.

Medication Parents, please remember that if your child has medication in school, it must be in date and we should have the correct amount according to their care plans e.g. two epi-pens in school (one to be kept in the classroom and the other for the medical room).
Child Protection and Safeguarding Like all settings working with children, we are required to have policies and procedures in place in line with our local and National guidelines. I would like to raise parental awareness of this issue and inform you that if a child makes a disclosure in school, as a staff team we are required to pass the matter on to Social Services. We are also committed to working with all families to achieve positive outcomes and support for our pupils. The main area of concern that has arisen in the school over recent years relates to domestic violence in the home and/or chastisement of children (hitting, slapping etc.).

Well done to all of you!
Racist Incidents I am increasingly concerned that some of our children from the minority groups in our school have once again been victims of racism and racist name calling. I would encourage all parents to support the school’s policy. I would highlight that recently there have been three victims, who all have Black African, Black Caribbean or Black British backgrounds. So for me, as Headteacher, there appears to be a common theme, which we will address in assemblies and in class discussions. Please also note that all incidents are recorded and reported to the Local Authority and the victim and perpetrators are always spoken to.
