Newsletter No 14 14th December 2011

As we come to the end of another term I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the school’s success:
• the continued support of parents and carers
• the continuing good behaviour of our pupils
• a stable, committed and hardworking staff team
• the improved attendance
• the improved assessment outcomes across the school
• the high attendance by parents at school events including parents evening, workshops, Eid presentation, Cultural Diversity Events, Coffee Mornings, the Year 3 performance.
• the PTA pantomime
• the link and support of our Zambian partner school
• the commitment of our governing body
• the improved reputation of the school within the local authority.
• the volunteer programme

I would like to thank all parents who attended the coffee mornings and gave us honest feedback. As a staff team we are committed to responding to the feedback and addressing issues raised, and I will be organizing another such morning early next term.

Staffing Update Sadly, we will be saying a fond farewell to a key member of the senior staff team, Alison Dreese, assistant headteacher. After careful consideration, Alison will be taking early retirement from January 2012. I am sure you will join me in thanking her for the great contribution to the school, especially to Early Years and the development of young teachers. Her departure leaves a huge gap within the school. On behalf of all pupils, parents, staff and governors, I wish Alison all the very best for the future. She will continue her contact with the school as a consultant, and the carer of the 2 guinea pigs she has given to our Early Year pupils.

We will also be welcoming back Safiyyah Ikram from maternity leave. She will be providing cover and support across Years 1-5 on 3 days a week.

Car Park I am increasingly concerned regarding the despicable behaviour and dangerous parking of some parents. Just this morning, a car whose registration is LN10 ZWD drove in the car park the wrong way, over a curb breaking a plant and squashing a bollard! I would urge those guilty of this to show more consideration in future.

Holidays during term time In line with school and local authority policy please note I will not be authorising any holidays, and you will be fined if you decide to go ahead.

Applications for Reception 2012 For parents applying for a place in Reception 2012 a system has been set up so that parents are able to complete their applications using the online eAdmissions system. The gates will not open any earlier than 8.45am. Please also help us by sending in money for trips or arrears in envelopes that are clearly labelled with your child’s name and class, so that these get to the correct collection box and can be handed in to the senior member of staff on duty at the gate and/or doorways.

Newsletter No 11 23rd Nov 2011

Change to the start of the school day from Monday 28th November In order to ensure a smooth start to the day, address the issue of congestion in the playground and reduce the pressure in the car park, from Monday all children can come straight into their class from 8.45am. Teachers will no longer come down to collect the children but will be ready in class to receive them. The aim of this is to ensure a steady flow through the car park, avoid delays on the part of the teacher, get children into a warm environment and improve punctuality. Designated staff will be appointed to the doorways to ensure security and safety. Teachers will bring the class down at the end of the day as usual. I would ask for your support in ensuring that this goes smoothly next Monday onwards.

Breakfast/After School Childcare Provision Please note that this provision is full to capacity and should not be used as emergency cover, as there is no more space.

Racist Incident Monitoring In line with Local and National policies and procedures, we ensure that all racist incidents are recorded and appropriate action is taken. Whilst I am pleased to inform you that such incidents are rare at Cranbrook, recently we have had children say ‘My dad says I cannot sit next to people who are black or eat ham’. I must emphasise that this is overt racism and will not be tolerated by the school. I would, therefore, ask that parents be aware.

Stranger Danger Please ensure that you are vigilant around the school site, as reports from other local schools have been received that indicate that school students are being approached by strangers.

Disabled Parking Spaces Just to remind parents not to park in disabled bays unless disabled. They are extra wide which allows the disabled person to get out—it is not just about parking near to the building/playground.

Small Car Park Would parents/carers please ensure that they walk through the pedestrian gate and stay on the path and not walk through the gate for vehicles and in the service road, this is for your own health and safety as there are large vehicles using this entrance.

Zambia Mark H and Sheena spent the half term week in Zambia visiting and teaching at the school we have linked with. This was a wonderful opportunity and they have already come back and started sharing information with the children at Cranbrook to support their learning. Watch out for a coffee morning in the next few weeks where they will be able to share some photographs and stories about the week and how the money that was raised before half term was used to support Janna school. Also, take a look on our website under the ‘Download’ section where some photographs show you the school….http://www.cranbrookprimary.redbridge.sch.uk/

He was 7th in the last Olympics and is currently in training for the Olympic trials. Please send in the sponsor forms and money by next Wednesday (16th Nov) at the latest. Look out for an article in the Ilford Recorder either this week or next.

Parent Coffee Mornings Update Although not a huge turnout, those parents who did attend Wednesday and Friday’s session last week, made some very valid points and shared very useful feedback with me. Much of the feedback was positive in relation to the developments in many aspects of the school. I would like to take this opportunity to remind the parents of Years 4, 5 and 6 that there is a coffee morning at 9.15 this Friday 11th November, where I hope to gather more views on the work of the school. A detailed report of feedback will be shared in next week’s newsletter.

Considerate Parking We have, yet again, received complaints from some of the residents on The Drive regarding the driver of a silver Polo, registration EX05 LTE, who parked across their drive and then threw litter out of the window. A black Galaxy, registration EX11 JZR and a red Mazda registration E5 TYR who are regularly parking across residents driveways. Also, would the owner of car registration EY07 WWD, not speed in the car park and go the wrong way round, as observed by me last Friday.

Sponsorship forms were sent home to all KS1 and KS2 parents just before half term. This is a really exciting opportunity for your child to take part in some exercise and have their photo taken with Larry. Please make sure your child has their PE Kit in school that day.

Year 2/Year 6 SATs Meetings - As these year groups both have their Standardised Assessment Tasks and Tests at the end of the year, we have arranged meetings for parents to provide you with information on what to expect and also how you can support your child. Possible School Closure 30th November 2011 As part of the ongoing dispute regarding changes to pensions, it is likely that many public sector workers, including school staff, will be out on strike on 30th November. Whilst I cannot confirm this, I would like all parents to note that school may have to be closed for the day.

Parent Coffee Mornings I would like to invite parents to meet me informally for a coffee and biscuits, but also to gather your views on how the school is doing. I do hope that you will make every effort to attend so that we can work in close partnership to improve the needs of the school and children.
Yrs 2 and 3— Fri 4th Nov at 9.15-10.15am
Yrs 4,5 and 6—Fri 11th Nov at 9.15-10.15am

Come and meet the Governors School governors will be available in the cookery room on the middle floor on the 10th November, which is our parents evening, to meet parents.

Zumba Classes Zumba Classes are being held at the Frenford Centre on a Monday morning at 9.30am. Each session will cost £5, with a loyalty card £3.25. The first session will cost £2.50. If any parents/carers are interested in joining these classes please collect a flyer from the office.

Considerate Parking We have, yet again, received some complaints from our neighbours regarding some parents parking inconsiderately over their driveways when dropping off and collecting their children from school, Would the owner of car registration MM57 UFE, please make sure that you park in an appropriate and safe place.
Thank you to all parents who continue to show consideration to children’s safety and the law. However, recently one of our pupils was knocked over outside school, and I continue to be concerned about the lack of consideration by some parents who not only drive dangerously without putting seatbelts on their children, but persistently stop in the middle of the car park to let their children run out without ensuring that they have safely reached their class line. DO YOU REALLY NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY, OR THAT OF OTHERS?!!!! Shame on you—you know who you are!!!

School Website Please note that we are currently working on improving this, but would still encourage you to look at updates.

Zambia A big thank you for the donations for our Zambian link appeal. We managed to raise £454.70 which will all be spent on resources that Mark H and Sheena will be taking out to Janna school at half-term. Mark and Sheena are really looking forward to developing our links and meeting the staff and children of Janna school. When they return they will share lots of information through displays and assemblies. Year 1 and Year 5 children have already been working hard on recording a song and producing art work for us to share in Zambia. Watch out for information after half-term.

Diversity Events I would like to take this opportunity to say a big ‘thank you’ to Junaida, assistant head, for organizing a fantastic week of events where all pupils, staff and parents were able to celebrate the diversity that exists within our amazing school community.

Breakfast/ After School Childcare Provision We still have a few places available for this paid for facility to support working parents. If you are interested, please contact the school office.
Yr 5 Swimming There will be a letter coming out regarding this tomorrow for Yr 5 parents. Please ensure that permission slips are signed and returned by the end of Friday. Please note, Swimming lessons are an entitlement for every child and no one can be withdrawn from these lessons.

Uniform Earlier this week I met with Mr Shah from ‘Rupens’, the shop that now sells our school uniform, to share parents’ concerns about the increase in cost. Unfortunately I was not successful in getting a reduction in price other than the white polo shirts, which he will sell 1 for £9.50 and 2 for £12. I remain committed to encouraging all parents to send their child to school in uniform, I would compromise on accepting that the white polo shirts without the school logo can be worn, along with plain grey cardigans/jumpers, so that our uniform colours remain in place.
Chicken Eggs Our chickens have now started to lay eggs. Staff have already tried these, and parents are invited to make a small donation and collect them as well. Please note, only adults can eat them.

Newsletter No 1 8th Sept 2011

A very warm welcome back! I do hope that you had an enjoyable and restful summer break. It has been lovely to see the children return with such enthusiasm and energy.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our new pupils , parents and staff a happy and successful time at Cranbrook.
Staffing Update Mark Evans is currently on paternity leave till 19th September, as he is now the proud dad of Olivia. I am sure you will all join me in congratulating him and his wife.
Ian will also be returning on 19th Sept. Parents of class 5G, please read the letter that was sent to you today explaining his absence.
A letter has also been sent to the parents of 1G about John’s absence.
We hope to see all the above mentioned very soon.

School Motto Having spent time considering the feedback from parents and children over the past year, the staff team has worked together over the last 3 days and agreed the following as our school motto: ‘Our Children Today, Our Future Tomorrow’.

Given the recent riots that distressed all of us, I am sure you will support our belief that it is crucial for home and school to continue to work in partnership to ensure that our children grow and develop into responsible and respectful citizens of the future. The motto will appear on all future communication.

Cranbrook Values We have also spent time considering the Olympic Values and have adopted them as our own because they truly reflect what we hold dear in our daily work and are the values, which we would want all our children to adhere to:
Respect Excellence Equality Friendship Courage Determination Inspiration

These values will be the focus of many assemblies and class discussions throughout the year and I would ask you, as parents, to explore these with your children.

Uniform As always I would ask for your support in ensuring that children follow the school’s uniform policy each day and wear no jewellery to school.
Please note that uniform is no longer being sold via the school. I am aware that some of you have concerns about the price of Rupens, the shop that now sells our school uniform. Unfortunately the shop owner has put the cost in line with the other 22 schools that he sells for and as we have never raised our costs, I realize that this has come as a surprise to many, including us!, as we did not foresee such a steep increase.

Clubs A letter will be sent out on Monday 12th September. Clubs will begin week beginning 26th Sept.

Class Information Sessions These will begin on Monday and are an opportunity for parents to hear what is planned for the year group. The sessions will take place at 9-9.30am in a classroom of each year group. I hope that you will take the time to attend.
Please make a note of when it is your child’s class’ turn.
These do not apply to Reception and Yr 6 parents as they had meetings in the summer.

Dinner Money Please note this is £1.95 a day or £ 9.75 per week. Please send this in a clearly labeled, sealed envelope to the school office.
Attendance and Punctuality Please ensure that all children in Rec-Yr 6 arrive in the school by 8.50am. All absences must be reported to the school office via a letter or phone call.

As we have waiting lists at all year groups, children who take holidays during term time are likely to lose their place at Cranbrook.

Year 5 1st Day arrangements A reminder for the current 4G and 4R (5G and 5R from September) that they are invited to come into school on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th September in traditional African dress.

Local Resident Parking Problems I have had a complaint from a local resident who is constantly having parents parking over their driveway. A white skip lorry which continues to park and block driveways on a regular basis, leaving their vehicle unattended. In addition to this there is a green Mazda hatchback registration no. Y386 LHC regularly blocking driveways, leaving the vehicle unattended. Please be more considerate when bringing and collecting your children to school.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support and wish you a restful and enjoyable summer break!

Early notice of possible school closure on 30th June You may be aware that a number of teaching and school based unions are due to strike on this date. Therefore, I write to give you early notice to make the necessary arrangements for childcare, as the large majority of Staff at Cranbrook are likely to take their union’s advice and support the action.

Punctuality I am extremely concerned at the significant number of children that are brought in late to school. The class registers close at 9.05am prompt, so please take any children that are later than this to the School Office to be registered. Please do not sneak them up the stairs unregistered as this would mean in an evacuation the children would not be accounted for. In order to avoid this issue the gate will be locked promptly at 9.05am. Please do not shout at the Staff who have been asked to lock the gate as this is a serious safety matter!
