Newsletter No 10 16th Nov 2011

Inclement Weather Parents, PLEASE send your child appropriately dressed for school in warm coats now that the temperature is dropping. I am concerned that so many children are arriving with no additional clothing for play and lunchtimes.

Feedback from Coffee Mornings and Parent’s Evening Thank you to all parents/carers who took the time to share their views of the school’s strengths and areas for development. Your feedback has been shared with staff and we have already started to make adjustments. Please see accompanying sheet for details of feedback.

Primary Transition Workshops for Parents of Children in Nursery If you are a parent whose child attends Cranbrook Nursery then we would like to invite you to a form filling session to help you to apply for a Primary School for your child. The workshop will take place on Tuesday 29th November 2011 and there will be two sessions available. The first will take place in the morning from 9am – 10.30am and the second will take place in the afternoon from 2pm – 3.30pm in the small hall. Please note that the deadline for the submission of all Primary School applications is Sunday 15th January 2012. Applications can also be completed online by logging onto www.redbridge.gov.uk If you have any further enquiries please do not hesitate to contact Beverley who is the schools’ parent support adviser

Breakfast/After School Childcare Provision Please note that this provision is full to capacity and should not be used as emergency cover, as there is no more space.

Racist Incident Monitoring In line with Local and National policies and procedures, we ensure that all racist incidents are recorded and appropriate action is taken. Whilst I am pleased to inform you that such incidents are rare at Cranbrook, recently we have had children say ‘My dad says I cannot sit next to people who are black or eat ham’. I must emphasise that this is overt racism and will not be tolerated by the school. I would, therefore, ask that parents be aware.

Stranger Danger Please ensure that you are vigilant around the school site, as reports from other local schools have been received that indicate that school students are being approached by strangers.

Disabled Parking Spaces Just to remind parents not to park in disabled bays unless disabled. They are extra wide which allows the disabled person to get out—it is not just about parking near to the building/playground.

Small Car Park Would parents/carers please ensure that they walk through the pedestrian gate and stay on the path and not walk through the gate for vehicles and in the service road, this is for your own health and safety as there are large vehicles using this entrance.

Zambia Mark H and Sheena spent the half term week in Zambia visiting and teaching at the school we have linked with. This was a wonderful opportunity and they have already come back and started sharing information with the children at Cranbrook to support their learning. Watch out for a coffee morning in the next few weeks where they will be able to share some photographs and stories about the week and how the money that was raised before half term was used to support Janna school. Also, take a look on our website under the ‘Download’ section where some photographs show you the school….http://www.cranbrookprimary.redbridge.sch.uk/

Olympic Event What a fantastic morning we had on Tuesday, when Larry Achike visited, and shared his experiences and successes with us all. He was 7th in the last Olympics and is currently in training for the Olympic trials. Please send in the sponsor forms and money by next Wednesday (16th Nov) at the latest. Look out for an article in the Ilford Recorder either this week or next.

Parent Coffee Mornings Update Although not a huge turnout, those parents who did attend Wednesday and Friday’s session last week, made some very valid points and shared very useful feedback with me. Much of the feedback was positive in relation to the developments in many aspects of the school. I would like to take this opportunity to remind the parents of Years 4, 5 and 6 that there is a coffee morning at 9.15 this Friday 11th November, where I hope to gather more views on the work of the school. A detailed report of feedback will be shared in next week’s newsletter.

A black Galaxy, registration EX11 JZR and a red Mazda registration E5 TYR who are regularly parking across residents driveways. Also, would the owner of car registration EY07 WWD, not speed in the car park and go the wrong way round, as observed by me last Friday.

This is a really exciting opportunity for your child to take part in some exercise and have their photo taken with Larry. Please make sure your child has their PE Kit in school that day.

Possible School Closure 30th November 2011 As part of the ongoing dispute regarding changes to pensions, it is likely that many public sector workers, including school staff, will be out on strike on 30th November. Whilst I cannot confirm this, I would like all parents to note that school may have to be closed for the day.

Parent Coffee Mornings I would like to invite parents to meet me informally for a coffee and biscuits, but also to gather your views on how the school is doing. I do hope that you will make every effort to attend so that we can work in close partnership to improve the needs of the school and children.

Zumba Classes Zumba Classes are being held at the Frenford Centre on a Monday morning at 9.30am. Each session will cost £5, with a loyalty card £3.25. The first session will cost £2.50. If any parents/carers are interested in joining these classes please collect a flyer from the office.

Considerate Parking We have, yet again, received some complaints from our neighbours regarding some parents parking inconsiderately over their driveways when dropping off and collecting their children from school, Would the owner of car registration MM57 UFE, please make sure that you park in an appropriate and safe place.
Thank you to all parents who continue to show consideration to children’s safety and the law. However, recently one of our pupils was knocked over outside school, and I continue to be concerned about the lack of consideration by some parents who not only drive dangerously without putting seatbelts on their children, but persistently stop in the middle of the car park to let their children run out without ensuring that they have safely reached their class line. DO YOU REALLY NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY, OR THAT OF OTHERS?!!!! Shame on you—you know who you are!!!

School Website Please note that we are currently working on improving this, but would still encourage you to look at updates.

Zambia A big thank you for the donations for our Zambian link appeal. We managed to raise £454.70 which will all be spent on resources that Mark H and Sheena will be taking out to Janna school at half-term. Mark and Sheena are really looking forward to developing our links and meeting the staff and children of Janna school. When they return they will share lots of information through displays and assemblies. Year 1 and Year 5 children have already been working hard on recording a song and producing art work for us to share in Zambia. Watch out for information after half-term.

Newsletter No 4 28th Sept 2011

Dahlicious Dress Up Day This Friday 30th September, the children are invited to come into school dressed up as a character from any of Roald Dahl’s fantastic stories or simply wear his favourite colour—yellow. This will cost each child £1 donation and all the money raised will go to Roald Dahl’s Children’s Charity which helps raise money for children living with serious illnesses to make their lives a little bit better. We hope you will join in our Dahlicious Dress Up Day!

Parent Governor Vacancy We have vacancies for parent governors. All parents are eligible to apply and are requested to write to me outlining why you would be a good parent governor. Please be aware that this role is voluntary and unpaid. If you are interested please collect a form from the school office.

Diversity Week Our annual diversity week celebrations will take place week beginning the 17th October. This week was designed to raise awareness and involve pupils, staff and parents in promoting equality and diversity. A series of events will take place during this week. Parents will receive letters informing them of these events. We have invited an African singer, a Balkon music/dance group, a Bollywood dancer and Zulu Nation performers. Pupils will need to come dressed up on the day these events take place. We look forward to your support and co-operation.

Fire Evacuation The unscheduled/accidental evacuation earlier this week raised a few issues as it occurred at the end of the school day. I would ask all parents to ensure that if this happens again, you remain with your child and accompany his/her class lining up alongside them rather than crowding round, so that we can quickly check that all children are accounted for.
Reminder for Trips Please note the dates opposite for forthcoming trips.

Photographs Those children who were unable to have their photographs taken yesterday will be able to have them taken when the photographer is back in school on 18th October.
Parking It has been brought to my attention that the following vehicles, a dark blue Toyota Jeep EF56 XXK and a silver Lexus V409 MGU blocked the entrance to the main car park. Please be more considerate when bringing and collecting your children to school.
