Newsletter No.2 10th September 2014

We face many challenges this year with new initiatives, including the New Primary Curriculum and the Reforms for Provision for Pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Please visit the school website to view information about the SEN Local Offer. I would also encourage you to attend the workshops for your child’s year group for input on the new curriculum.
Universal Free School Meals Another new initiative in schools is to provide a school dinner for all children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 classes. This has required us to set up a second service area and undertake additional work in the school kitchen, so that we are able to feed the higher number of pupils. Thus far, after a few teething problems, this is going well.
However, if you are eligible for benefits, we need you to apply for Free School Meals, so that the school continues to receive funding for providing additional opportunities for your children. Support is available for parents for completing the application forms.
Birthday Treats
If you are sending in birthday treats for your child’s class, please do not send cakes for the teacher to cut and distribute, as this is not feasible in the classroom setting. Please also bear in mind that a number of our children have food allergies and can often be excluded from enjoying such treats.

Cranbrook Parenting Course
We would like to invite parents and carers to take part in a 5 week parenting course starting from 9.30am-11.15am every Friday from 26th Sept till 24th October. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet other parents, strengthen their parenting skills, develop new skills and techniques, learn how to manage behaviour in a positive way and raise children’s self-esteem. A certificate will be awarded to all participates at the end of the course and free refreshments will be provided throughout. If you would like to enrol please phone Beverley, the school’ Parent Support Advisor on 0208 518 2562.

Year Group Workshops As usual these sessions will take place at 9-9.30am in the main hall on the relevant dates below. I hope you will take the time to attend.
11th Sept - Year 6
15th Sept - Year 1
17th Sept - Year 3
18th Sept - Year 4
19th Sept - Year 5

Sessions for Nursery and Reception parents will be organised for later in the term.

Attendance We must achieve over 96% this year, so that our children achieve the best outcomes that they are capable of. Last year’s assessment results have shown that children whose attendance was not good, did not achieve as highly as others.

Remember, good attendance and punctuality= good progress= good self-esteem.

Unauthorised Absence I would like to remind parents that if your child has 12 sessions of unauthorised absence through late arrivals recorded throughout the academic year, the Local Authority will issue you with a penalty notice. Penalty notices will also be issued in the first instance for leave of absence taken without permission of the Head teacher. The notice incurs a fine of £120 per parent per child, which is reduced to £60 per parent per child, if it is paid within 21 days.

UNICEF Fundraising Some of our parents will be selling samosas and pizzas after school on Friday 19th September to raise money to support children—more to follow in next week’s newsletter.

Paperless Newsletter From after October half term, we will not be sending out a paper copy of the newsletter, as it will be available on the school’s website each week. However, if you would still prefer this, a copy will be available from the school office.

A belated ‘well done’ to Adwita and Maleeha for their fantastic performance last term!

Colour Assemblies Colour assemblies will begin on Thursday 25th September. However, instead of running assemblies every week, they will take place fortnightly as follows:
